If the earth made a tape, would you be on it?

Could you possibly be a reason for the earth’s death?

What did you possibly do to be on a tape?

But unlike Hannah Baker’s 13 tapes, the earth would make a million tapes, one each, for one of us who did something or nothing to push it closer to its death.

And if you are reading this, you are probably one of the reasons.

“Hey it’s me Earth. Your earth. Don’t adjust your… whatever device you’re hearing this on. It’s me, live and in stereo.

It’s not like none of you cared, some of you indeed did. It was just that none of you cared enough. I wish people cared more about me, as much as they cared about who created me.

You did everything to suffocate me,from marine pollution to global warming, from unsustainable consumption to wildlife crime.

You then took away all that was left; my clean air, my fresh water, my uncontaminated soil.

Don’t shirk off your responsibility saying that you couldn’t possibly have caused such a massive blow to me. Remember it’s the little things that matter.

Only when the last tree will die, the last river poisoned, the last fish caught, will you realise that you can’t eat money.”image12

We can’t change the past. But we can prevent further harm. A society is defined as much by what it refuses to destroy, as by what it creates. And a society needs  somebody like you to change things, somebody who cares a lot about the environment. The greatest mistake we make is that we think that our little effort, our little action, our little initiative doesn’t matter. It does. And maybe it’s the only bridge between the earth and its demise.image11

Don’t be a reason for the earth’s death. Plant a tree, get your vehicle serviced on time, repair leaking taps, use environment friendly products; in short do your bit. Because the saying, ‘It’s never too late’, doesn’t apply to all situations. Sometimes it does get very late and all you are left with is regrets and a slight chance at redemption.
